Navigating the side panel

The side panel is where you move through Chief. Start chats, switch between work, and manage your knowledge all in one place. Everything is organized to help you go from asking → exploring → organizing → automating without breaking flow.

Overview

Chief’s interface includes a persistent sidebar on the left that gives you access to every part of your workspace.

At a glance, you can:

  • Start a new chat

  • Jump between conversations

  • Organize knowledge and assets

  • Configure how Chief behaves (Skills, Expert Voices, Actions)

The sidebar is always visible, so switching context is instant.

Layout at a glance

  • Workspace selector (top): Switch between Projects

  • Primary navigation: Chats, Projects, Library, and more

  • Recent chats: Quick access to your latest work

  • Utilities & settings (bottom): Extension, help, account settings

New Chat

Start here every time.

Click New Chat to open a blank conversation. This is where you:

  • Ask questions

  • Run analyses

  • Explore ideas

  • Work with your knowledge

Each chat keeps its own context, so you can refine prompts and return anytime without losing progress.

Tip: Press ⌘ + K (Ctrl + K on Windows) to start a new chat from anywhere.

Chats

Chats is where you access all conversations within your current Project.

From here, you can:

  • Browse all chats in the project

  • Reopen and continue past work

  • Stay organized within a specific workspace

Think of this as your working layer—everything you’ve actively done.

Projects

Projects let you organize your work into separate, focused spaces — each with its own chats, assets, and knowledge.

Click Projects at the top of the sidebar to open the Projects panel, where you can:

  • View all Projects you’ve created or are a part of

  • Switch between Projects — your workspace updates automatically

  • Manage Projects — edit names, descriptions, and invites

  • Create new Projects — define roles, add teammates, and assign access levels

Projects keep your work organized and contextually isolated, so you can focus without mixing client, research, or internal initiatives.

Library

Library is your knowledge management hub.

It contains:

  • Labels – Tag and organize assets your way

  • Collections – Create scoped datasets of Labels for focused analysis

Use Library when you want to structure, filter, and control what knowledge is used.

Concepts

Concepts surface the meaning across your files.

They automatically extract and organize:

  • Key themes

  • Entities (people, brands, ideas)

  • Signals across multiple assets

Use Concepts to:

  • Explore insights across files

  • Connect ideas without digging into raw documents

  • Jump back to source context when needed

Skills

Skills define how Chief approaches tasks.

They are reusable instruction sets that:

  • Shape how responses are generated

  • Ensure consistency across workflows

  • Improve quality for repeat use cases (summarization, research, writing, etc.)

When a Skill is active, its instructions are automatically included in your chat context.

Expert Voices

Expert Voices control how Chief responds.

Use them to:

  • Apply specific tones or perspectives

  • Inject subject matter expertise into responses

  • Represent yourself, your team, or your brand

You can use built-in voices or create your own—and mention them directly in chats.

Actions

Actions automate your workflows.

They let you:

  • Trigger prompts when new data is added

  • Run analyses on a schedule

  • Generate outputs without manual input

Actions run in the background, so work continues even when you’re not in the app.

Recent Chats

Quickly jump back into your latest work.

Recent Chats shows:

  • Your most recently active conversations

  • A fast way to resume context

  • An easy way to reuse prompts or outputs

Tools & shortcuts

At the bottom of the sidebar:

  • Chrome Extension – Send content from the web directly into Chief

  • Help & Support – Access docs and get assistance

  • Search – Find chats quickly

Account & Settings

Manage your account and workspace settings in one place.

From here, you can access:

  • General Settings – Preferences and personalization

  • Billing – Plan and subscription details

  • Organization – Team and workspace management

  • Projects – Manage project-level settings

  • Get Help – Support and resources

  • Latest Changes – Product updates and changelog

  • Sign out
